Vancouver’s own Grinding MassGrave has stood the test of time and released another album of punishing underground tunes in an existence that reaches back to 2003, the year of their first release. Forgive me if I’m wrong.
Just before I got my hands on this 2011 release I saw them live and was impressed with their living room performance.
Crust, Grind, D-Beat? It’s all there and MassGrave blends it together on this self titled full length that definitely needed some extra volume on my stereo. When I finally got a chance to really turn it up and the glasses in my liquor cabinet started vibrating, I knew this was good.
The sound is super low and thick, and MassGrave addresses all its influences, making this album sound a lot like everything. A mix of AGX, Disrupt, Napalm, Discharge, CBT and Disgust would be my interpretation. Nothing really spats of the vinyl too much, but you’ll be returning to this album just for the simple fact that MassGrave brings solid and timeless tracks without compromise to much variety.
